Dive into the Acoustic Roots of Sanskrit Language | HUA

The Beginning Sanskrit – Script & Sounds course is designed to provide students with an introduction to the Devanagari script and the acoustic roots of the Sanskrit language. The course covers the pronunciation of vowels and consonants, and includes greetings, songs, short stories, and easy-going introductions. Students will also learn etiquette phrases for easy discussions and basic numbers in Sanskrit.

This course is a required component for students who are enrolled in the Introductory Phase of the Certificate Program in Sanskrit Proficiency. The course is structured into one quarter, which is equivalent to one unit, and spans 10 weeks with 1.5 hours of instruction per week. The final test will be administered during the 11th and final week of the course.

The course is based on the curriculum and textbooks designed by Samskrita Bharati USA (SBusa.org). The content of the course will be drawn from the SB – USA – published books “ARUNA,” “UDAYA,” & “AYANAM,” as well as additional relevant course content. The course is designed in a simplified series of practices that enable students with no prior experience with the Devanagari Script to begin listening, writing, and reading in the script.

The primary objectives of this course are for students to gain an understanding of the roots of the various sounds used in Sanskrit, as well as the pronunciation and writing of the Sanskrit script. The script is composed of single letters that can be either vowels or consonants, and students will also learn the pronunciation and writing of the Sanskrit combination letters, as well as word formation utilizing these letters.

In addition, students will have the opportunity to recite a few straightforward Sanskrit poems while paying close attention to the pronunciation and recite and sing along with some easy tunes. The course also provides opportunities for students to have candid interactions with one another, enhancing their learning experience.
